What is Reduction Relief Printmaking?

Reduction relief is a method used to produce multi-colored prints from a single block of wood, linoleum, or hard foam. Here I used my favorite Shina wood - fine-grained plywood from Hokkaido, the northern-most island of Japan. I carved into the block, and then carved some more after each color was printed, eliminating areas that were not intended to be printed in any particular color.

Of course it all began with drawing, in this case done with black marker and sumi ink to help me see the areas I did (or did not) want to "reduce". I mixed 4 sets of printing inks and changed them with each print (just for fun) so each print is unique, with 6 total.

Can you tell how much I enjoyed this process, in spite of it being sooooo time consuming?
